Bruree’s opening game in the 2023 Intermediate County Championship against Hospital Herbertstown would prove to be a convincing win and a successful outing in all respects.
While Hospital scored the opening point it would only be one of two for them in the first half. Bruree would reply with six unanswered points due to Sam Cronolly’s accuracy on frees and from play. Kevin Hayden, Frankie Barrington, Paddy Lynch and Matthew Howard would also contribute to the first half scoring.
The Bruree backs and midfield were able to stonewall the Hospital forwards at every turn due to excellent man-marking which is reflected in Hospitals lack of first half scores. This coupled with the support play given to the forward line by the midfield was a huge contribution to Bruree’s first half success and is reflected in the halftime score of 14-2.
The second half began as prolifically as the first with Bruree continuing to increase their points tally steadily. A goal from Tommy Cronolly was the culmination of great play which saw him win the ball in the 45yrd line area and cross the 21yrd line only to find the net with a curling shot.
More scores would come from our forwards. Hospital would rally in the closing minutes bringing their point total to nine for a finish. This however, would be in vein as Bruree’s work up to that point had more than secured victory. With 1-21 to 0-09 being the final score Bruree showed their class and the victory is a credit to all involved.
